Records of Time
Even if I try hard to shoot street photography clean of outside influence, I won’t manage it. I walked the same Tel Aviv streets with my rattly, beloved Nikon FM10 and two prime lenses, a 50mm f/1.8 and a 105mm f/2.8. A roll of CineStill 800T and a roll of LomoChrome Purple XR. One week before the elections. This is what came out.
Posters of Ben-Gvir with a clown nose and graffiti across his forehead. The Messiah’s hat against the sky. A Hanukkah menorah smeared into the night. A new shelter in the yard of an old house that never had one, looking like a nuclear reactor behind a picket fence. A clementine rotting by the wall of the military cemetery. A drunk, homeless teddy bear who lost his child.
And in the middle of it, Gadi Eisenkot looks out from a poster with no makeup at all. It’s all fake anyway, but his gaze exposes the deep personal loss, and what came before it. An authentic moment. Everyone is looking for that moment when everything around is fake.
